Black River Technical College Technical Certificates: Automotive Service Technology (Electrical Engine)

Because technology changes so quickly in the auto industry, auto technicians must be familiar with equipment and must learn to diagnose problems quickly and accurately.

Automotive technology is quickly increasing in its complexity and the majority of training authorities firmly suggest that a person looking for automotive technician jobs finish a formal training program after leaving high school. A post secondary program such as automotive training allows you to prepare for a far more thorough career than you would achieve in a high school program and gives you a better chance for a better job in this field.

The two year Master Technician Certificate program is offered as 2 one year specialty certificates. The Electrical-Engine Specialty Certificate and the Powertrain-Systems Specialty Certificate are offered in conjunction with Introduction to Computer Concepts for the Master Technician Certificate.

Automotive Service Technology students at BRTC will work the state-of-the art equipment, to inspect and diagnose engines and other components, and also become familiar with computerized diagnostic tools. When finished with the course, students will be equipped with the skills required by many employers along with a solid foundation to build on if the student wishes to target a specialty. Students can pick drivability, air conditioning, front end, brake and transmission as specialties. Graduates of the Automotive Service Technician program will qualify for a certification from Automotive Service Excellence.

Career Opportunities

The skills that graduates of the two year Automotive Service Technology program will have are in considerable demand in the repair and service industry.

For several years the job demand for automotive technicians should rise mainly due to the increasing amount of cars on the roads.

The BRTC certificate program provides its graduates with the skills in demand at service stations, specialty shops, garages and other places who need auto technicians.

Overall Graduation Rate and Transfer-Out Rate

The overall graduation rate is also known as the "Student Right to Know" or IPEDS graduation rate. It tracks the progress of students who began their studies as full-time, first-time degree- or certificate-seeking students to see if they complete a degree or other award such as a certificate within 150% of "normal time" for completing the program in which they are enrolled.

Some institutions also report a transfer-out rate, which is the percentage of the full-time, first-time students who transferred to another institution.

Note that not all students at the institution are tracked for these rates. Students who have already attended another postsecondary institution, or who began their studies on a part-time basis, are not tracked for this rate.
