What Career Options Do I Have with an Education in Avionics?

The term avionics is a word formed from aviation and electronics. From the word itself we can determine the basic functions of an avionics technician or engineer; avionics deals with the electronic systems in planes, helicopters, and other airborne craft. Careers can range from simple replacements of landing lights to designing and engineering air warning systems for military aircraft. An avionics graduate may work for an airline, private business, or the government in military applications and maintenance.

In its most basic function an education in avionics will enable an individual to work as a maintenance professional for aircraft communications and electrical systems. The graduate will perform routine maintenance checks for the communication and radio systems, the electronics controlling the operation of the plane and replacing basic lights and wires as needed. The avionics technician has the authority to recommend grounding the plane or aircraft if they deem it is not fit for flight. These individuals can also be found on NASA projects constructing components and connecting systems on highly technical satellites.

Avionics is an integral part of the space program, and requires the use of avionics engineers and technicians. The avionics engineers are responsible for designing the communication systems, power management systems, and all of the internal communication between these systems. Avionics comprises almost 60 percent of most space program projects, and is considered to be one of the most important disciplines in this process. The avionics technicians are the individuals who carry out the designs and plans of the avionics engineers on projects. They connect the systems by hand or through the use of computerized robots.

Avionics engineers can be employed by private companies in similar capacities. Airliners and passenger planes need systems to control the plane's movement, communications and sensors for altitude, radar, and internal alerts. These systems keep the passengers and cargo safe and ensure the proper components are installed on the aircraft. The avionics technicians and engineers work with a team of individuals when designing new systems and aircraft. Avionics education will prepare a student for designing, repairing, and creating new innovations in the aviation industry.

The military employs a multitude of avionics technicians and engineers in civilian and military roles. Research is done by avionics graduates for the military through various programs and projects in association with military-trained avionics technicians. A large portion of avionics engineers and technicians get their start in the military and go on the advanced training after leaving the service. Engineering research in avionics has led to the development of stealth technology and some of the most advanced radar detection systems for the U.S. military. Without avionics graduates there would be no stealth bomber or stealth fighter.

Avionics graduates can choose from a variety of careers within the field. A graduate may choose to work on highly sensitive military applications or work with NASA on satellite and space missions. The avionics technician or engineer may also work for private design groups or airports in maintenance capacities. The options open to avionics graduates offer highly technical and scientific positions that the country cannot live or operate without.
