How to Become an ASE Certified Automotive Technician
Those automotive technicians that wear the blue and white insignia are certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). Although becoming ASE certified is not always mandatory in your place of employment, it is becoming increasingly important to seek the certification, especially considering how competitive the job market is today. So how do you become an ASE certified automotive technician?
There are 8 different ASE tests to choose from. These include Engine Performance, Engine Repair, Heating and A/C, Manual Drive Train/Axel, Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, Brakes, Steering and Suspension, and Electrical Systems. You only have to pass one of these tests in order to become ASE certified, however. Of course, if you want the master certification then you have to pass all 8 tests.
In addition to passing one of the tests you must also have 2 years of experience working in the automotive industry. This experience could stem from a tire center, dealership, or independent shop. It might also come from a training program or a school as well. Generally speaking, training received from high school, community college, or technical school will substitute as 1 year of experience so you will still need to get hands-on experience from an outside source as well.
Some people choose to enroll in training classes at vocational schools and community colleges in order to gain experience with vehicles and to prepare for the ASE tests. This can be very beneficial since the different tests can be challenging and many people like having the added assistance in passing them.
You should keep in mind, too, that taking the ASE costs money so you really shouldn’t try to take it until you feel confident that you can pass it. If you do not feel comfortable then it’s best to wait until you are. After all, it’s better to wait and pass it than to take it right away and not pass it and have to spend the money again.
There are quite a number of ASE preparation guides that are available to assist you in passing the various ASE test. These can come in very handy if you need additional study tools and help that you might not be receiving from your classes.
For the most part, people tend to put more trust in an automotive technician who has been certified as opposed to someone who is not certified. The ASE certification indicates that as a mechanic you consider your skills an integral aspect of your career. It shows potential employers, on the other hand, that you have motivation and perseverance and that you take your job seriously.
If you really want to increase your employment potential then you might want to attempt to pass all 8 areas and become a Master Technician. When you are able to show that you are skilled in several auto repair services, automotive technicians are able to increase their value to their employer as well as their salaries. Along with the right certification, experienced technicians who can demonstrate administrative ability sometimes advance to supervisor or service manager. Some might even go on to open their own repair shops if they have savvy business sense and enough capital to do so.
While it is not always mandatory to possess the ASE certification, most automotive technicians will find that having it increases their likelihood of finding employment and make them more legitimate candidates when searching for jobs. Although many people are skilled with their hands and work well in the industry, it is becoming more and more vital to have something that other potential employees do not.
