A Day in the Life of an Aircraft Technician

Aircraft technicians are responsible for making sure that aircrafts are running efficiently and at their full aptitude. They are responsible for general maintenance and repairs, as well as for upkeep. In fact, an aircraft technician’s job is one of the most important jobs within the aircraft industry since without a technician the aircraft might never make it up into the air at all. So what constitutes as a daily routine for an aircraft technician?

An aircraft technician is accountable for maintaining and repairing the aircraft, taxiing the aircraft, and operating the various systems and engines. It is all very complicated and technical work and a good degree of training and experience is required to even hold the position.

You might find that your work hours are varied. You could, for instance, work from 9:00 pm until 8:00 am, depending on the company that you work for. Before you begin any work, you will probably have a meeting with your team to determine what your responsibilities are for the day. That way, you will be aware of you duties before you start any actual maintenance or repairs.

Sometimes, you will work on an aircraft that is in a hangar. Other times, you will be working on an aircraft that’s on a ramp. On a daily basis, you might find yourself trouble-shooting, completing engine changes, filling out log books, and replacing different systems that pertain to the aircraft. You might also find that you are inspecting various aircrafts, testing them, and even dismantling them to some degree. The goal is to get the aircraft back in the air as quickly, and as safely, as possible.

If you work as an aircraft avionics technician, you might discover that some of your day is even spent repairing in-flight entertainment systems, lighting, navigation, and other systems that are controlled electronically.

Although you will have had a lot of training, you will still have to refer to your manuals from time to time. This will be true if you have tried to fix the problem but are still having difficulties. Your education will never really be over, since you will encounter a variety of dilemmas that you have never faced before.

You might work for a small airline company, the military, a large company, or even a small airfield. You could have a partner that works with you on a daily basis, but more than likely you will be part of a team. It will be very important to communicate effectively with your other team members since every nut and bolt on a plane is considered essential to its safety.

For the most part, you can expect to work 40 hour work weeks. If the hangars are full and you have to work outside on the ramps, you might encounter days that are difficult, especially when the weather is very hot or very cold.

Although you will need to work on a regimented schedule, you will also have to adhere to federal safety standards as well, so your work cannot be sloppy. After all, people’s lives will depend on your experience and the amount of consideration that you put into your job.

On some days, you can count on your work being very challenging. You might have to kneel, stand, lie down, and even work on ladders and scaffolds. You will spend very little, if any, time behind a desk. The job itself is very physically demanding. During very busy times, you might have to work overtime to ensure that the aircrafts are getting back up into the air in a timely and safe manner.

Although you will spend your days repairing and maintaining aircrafts, you can be assured that each day will be different from the one before it. For that reason, it can be a very varied and rewarding career if you are up for a challenge and like to work with your hands.
